The Good Hotel Guide is a truly impartial guide to luxurious hotels, boutique city hotels, family hotels in the country and friendly B&B’s. It’s the leading independent guide to hotels in Great Britain and Ireland and is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay.
The paperback guide book which is out today, is rewritten annually featuring the latest and greatest hotels and Jesmond Dene House is thrilled to be included for this forthcoming year. The Guide’s editors make a balanced judgment based on the reports from readers, backed where necessary by an anonymous inspection and Jesmond Dene House is delighted to have won in the Wedding Hotels category of the Editor’s Choice Award 2017.
Guide Book review – There is a country house feel to Peter Candler’s ‘friendly’, ‘surprisingly peaceful’ Tudor-style mansion in a wooded valley just five minutes by car from the city centre. Standing in ‘lovely’ grounds, the listed building is an eclectic mix of historical architectural detail: admire the Jacobean panelling here, the florid William de Morgan tiles there. Cherry-pick from individually designed, ‘beautifully appointed’, modern bedrooms, many with an individual feature – a private terrace, perhaps, or a window seat. All have freshly ground coffee, fresh milk, glossy magazines. Friends or family might book larger rooms with a shared lobby. ‘Our annexe room had a lovely garden – compliments to the gardener. One gripe? Poor lighting. But the staff brought a lamp when we mentioned it.’ The ‘vast’ afternoon teas are popular with locals and walk-in visitors; in the evening, chef Michael Penaluna’s modern British dinners are no less of a treat. The ‘extraordinarily varied’ breakfast is worth waking up for: besides freshly squeezed juices and ‘excellent’ home-baked croissants, try Caster kippers with seaweed butter. ‘Good walks down to the dene.’
Having won within the Weddings category, Jesmond Dene House has established itself as a most elegant luxury wedding venue which offers style, a sense of history and a beautiful green setting yet is only minutes from Newcastle city centre. Bordered by a large garden, the house overlooks the beautiful and unique wooded valley of Jesmond Dene. Inside the house there is an emphasis on individuality, understated luxury and genuine unfussy comfort. The rich features of the Arts & Crafts house make a handsome backdrop to bold and light filled rooms. There are huge windows, massive fireplaces and an overall feeling of colour and warmth.
Jesmond Dene House can arrange small supper parties or grand dinners, late wedding breakfasts or evening cocktails and canapes.
The Apartment Suite, for example is a quiet, private place for a ceremony for up to 6 guests or there is the option to throw a reception party for 120 guests in the richness of the wood-panelled, Great Hall. Together with the range of other rooms, the house can also cope with any number in between! There is a colourful garden for drinks and photographs and with 40 bedrooms, plenty of space for the bride and groom and their guests to stay and enjoy the big day.
